What is a gallbladder infection?

A gallbladder infection, called acute cholecystitis, is inflammation of the gallbladder, the small organ under the liver that stores bile. It is often linked to gallstones, which several clinics below cover on the same pages. It needs prompt medical care because it can spread if left untreated.

KYM Surgery’s gallbladder website notes that untreated cholecystitis can spread to the bile duct or the bloodstream, or inflame the pancreas. Some clinics also describe chronic cholecystitis, a longer-running inflammation, and complex cases where the bile duct is involved. Whatever the type, the diagnosis and the choice of treatment rest with your doctor.

What are the symptoms, and when is it an emergency?

The usual sign is constant pain in the upper right abdomen that may spread to the back or right shoulder, often with fever, nausea and vomiting. Yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools are warning signs that need urgent medical care.

Dr Lee Lip Seng’s acute cholecystitis page describes this pain pattern, and Ace Specialist Surgery and Endoscopy Clinic’s blog lists jaundice, dark urine and pale stools as reasons to seek help quickly. If you have severe abdominal pain with fever, go to a hospital emergency department. Some clinics below describe out-of-hours routes: Ace states that it offers 24/7 support and can arrange urgent consultations or surgery, and Surgicare asks patients with an emergency to attend the Gleneagles Urgent Care Centre and ask for Dr Tan Chun Hai.

How is a gallbladder infection treated?

Treatment usually starts in hospital with fasting, IV fluids, antibiotics and pain relief to settle the inflammation. The clinics describe removing the gallbladder, normally by keyhole surgery, as the definitive treatment. Patients who are too unwell for an operation may have a drainage tube placed instead.

On timing, Dr Tan Siong San’s gallbladder infection page describes early keyhole removal within 24 to 72 hours of symptoms starting. The table below shows the main options and which listed clinics describe each one on their websites.

OptionWhat it involvesListed clinics that describe it
Hospital careFasting, IV fluids, antibiotics and pain reliefG & L Surgical Clinic, KYM Surgery (mild cases), Lee Surgery and Endoscopy, Precision Surgical Centre

DrainageA tube to drain the gallbladder when surgery is not yet suitablePrecision Surgical Centre
Bile duct stone treatmentERCP (an endoscopic procedure) or keyhole bile duct surgeryLee Surgery and Endoscopy (ERCP), Nexus Surgical and LS Lee Surgery (bile duct surgery)

Which option suits you depends on how unwell you are, whether stones have moved into the bile duct, and your general health. Your surgeon will explain the choices before any procedure.

How much does gallbladder infection treatment cost in Singapore?

None of the nine clinics listed here publishes its own price for gallbladder infection treatment, so each shows Price on enquiry. One surgeon’s website quotes S$6,000 to S$9,600 for keyhole gallbladder removal, based on what it calls prevailing industry benchmarks.

The general figure does not say whether it includes GST, hospital ward charges or an emergency admission, so treat it as a rough guide rather than a quote. MOH also publishes fee benchmarks for common operations, which are worth checking when you compare estimates.

Your final bill will depend on things the clinic can explain: how long you stay in hospital, whether you are admitted as an emergency, which hospital or day surgery centre is used, and whether surgery is keyhole, robotic or open. Ask for an itemised estimate, and ask whether it includes GST.

Can I use MediSave or insurance?

G & L Surgical Clinic’s gallbladder page states that care is MediSave and insurance claimable. KYM Surgery states that Dr Kan Yuk Man is on Integrated Shield Plan specialist panels, and Raffles Health Insurance lists him on its Raffles Shield specialist panel. Claim limits depend on your plan and the procedure, so check with your insurer and the clinic before admission.

How do you choose a clinic for gallbladder infection treatment?

Check that the surgeon is registered as a specialist with the Singapore Medical Council, then look at which hospitals they operate in, how urgent care is handled, which procedures they offer and whether they are on your insurer’s panel.

  • Registration: search the surgeon’s name on the Singapore Medical Council’s online register to confirm registration and specialty.
  • Hospital access: a gallbladder infection often means a hospital stay, so ask where the surgeon is accredited. G & L Surgical Clinic, LS Lee Surgery and Precision Surgical Centre each list several private hospitals.
  • Urgent care: ask what happens out of hours. Ace states it offers 24/7 support, and Surgicare directs emergencies to the Gleneagles Urgent Care Centre.
  • Procedures: if you want to discuss robotic surgery or bile duct stones, check which clinics list them (see the table above).
  • Insurance: confirm the surgeon is on your Integrated Shield Plan panel, or ask how claims work if not.
  • Language: hospital profiles show, for example, that Dr Kan Yuk Man speaks English and Cantonese.

How did we put this list together?

We included clinics in Singapore whose own websites describe treating gallbladder infection or acute cholecystitis and name the treating surgeon. Every detail comes from the clinic’s website, a hospital directory or an insurer’s panel page, checked on 22 Oct 2026.

We do not rate, rank or score clinics, and we do not publish reviews. Clinics are shown A to Z. Where a clinic did not publish an address, phone number or price on the pages we checked, we left that detail blank rather than guess. Google ratings, where shown, are added separately. If a detail has changed, let us know and we will check it again.

What do people ask about gallbladder infection treatment?

These are common questions about gallbladder infection, answered from what the listed clinics and other surgeons’ pages say. Your own surgeon can tell you which answers apply to your situation and health.

Can a gallbladder infection be treated without surgery?

Mild cases are first treated with fasting, IV fluids, pain relief and antibiotics, and KYM Surgery lists antibiotics and pain relief for mild cases. Clinic pages, including Lee Surgery and Endoscopy and Dr Tan Siong San’s, describe removing the gallbladder as the definitive treatment. Your surgeon will advise on your case.

How soon after symptoms is surgery done?

Dr Tan Siong San’s page describes early keyhole removal within 24 to 72 hours of symptoms starting. Patients who are too unwell for an operation may have a drainage tube placed instead.

What is recovery like after keyhole gallbladder removal?

Dr Lee Lip Seng’s page says patients are usually discharged the same or next day and return to normal activity in 1 to 2 weeks. Recovery varies from person to person, so ask your surgeon what to expect.

Can I live without a gallbladder?

Yes. KYM Surgery’s gallbladder website states that you can live without a gallbladder and that digestion is not affected. Ask your surgeon about eating after surgery.

Is gallbladder infection treatment MediSave claimable?

G & L Surgical Clinic states its gallbladder care is MediSave and insurance claimable. Limits depend on the procedure and your plan, so confirm with the clinic and your insurer before admission, and check whether any estimate includes GST.
