How did we decide which clinics to include?

We included clinics that describe colonoscopy on their own websites and name the doctors who perform it. We recorded qualifications, locations and fees only where the clinic or its hospital publishes them, and we did not rate, score or rank any clinic.

  • The clinic describes colonoscopy on its own website, or lists it among its services.
  • The clinic names the doctor or doctors who carry out endoscopy.
  • Qualifications are shown only as the clinic or the hospital publishes them.
  • Prices are shown only where the clinic publishes them. Otherwise we say Price on enquiry.
  • We did not use review sites, ranked lists or directory cost tables without a clear source.

The listing order says nothing about quality. You can check any doctor’s registration on the Singapore Medical Council’s online register before you book.

What happens during a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a day procedure in which a doctor passes a thin, flexible camera through the large bowel to look for polyps, inflammation or other changes. It is usually done under sedation, and polyps can often be removed during the same procedure.

Timings vary by clinic. Dr Teoh Tiong Ann’s surgical practice says a colonoscopy takes 15 to 20 minutes, with at least 6 minutes spent inspecting the bowel as the scope is withdrawn. Richmond Gastroenterology Centre describes the procedure as done under mild sedation, with polyps removed or a biopsy taken if needed.

Afterwards, Gastrohealth Clinic notes you may have mild bloating or cramping, and that you should not drive, so bring someone to take you home. At AliveoMedical, doctors explain the initial findings before you leave, including how many polyps were removed and where. Biopsy results come later, once the samples have been examined.

How much does a colonoscopy cost in Singapore?

Most clinics do not publish a single colonoscopy price, because the bill has three parts: the doctor’s fee, the hospital facility fee and the sedation or anaesthetist fee. One listed clinic publishes a doctor’s fee of about S$1,500 for a straightforward colonoscopy, before the other two parts.

Hospital facility feeUse of the hospital’s endoscopy facilitiesS$600 to S$1,500, as published on drsulaiman.com.sg
Sedation or anaesthetist feeSedation during the procedureNot published by the clinics listed here

PS Tan Digestive & Liver Centre says its doctor’s fee is generally in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s fee benchmarks for private hospitals. The S$1,500 figure covers the doctor only, and the clinic’s page does not say whether GST is included. The facility fee range comes from a single surgeon’s website rather than an official source, so treat it as a rough guide and ask for an itemised estimate.

Here is what each listed clinic publishes about colonoscopy fees.

Ask each clinic how its estimate changes if polyps are removed or a biopsy is taken, so the final bill is not a surprise.

Can I use MediSave or insurance for a colonoscopy?

Often, at least in part. PS Tan Digestive & Liver Centre says MediSave and most insurers cover part or all of the bill, and Gastrohealth Clinic says its colonoscopy is MediSave claimable. Withdrawal limits and policy terms vary, so confirm with the clinic and your insurer first.

Ask the clinic for an itemised estimate, then check how much MediSave can be used and what your Integrated Shield Plan or company insurance covers. Doing this before the procedure date gives you time to sort out any paperwork.

How do I choose a clinic for colonoscopy?

Check who performs the procedure and their qualifications, where it is done, how the bill is split, and how findings are explained. You can confirm any doctor’s registration on the Singapore Medical Council’s public register before booking.

  • Who performs it: check the doctor’s specialty and qualifications. At PS Tan Digestive & Liver Centre, for example, Dr Tan Poh Seng personally performs all diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Where it is done: ask which hospital or endoscopy centre will be used, because the facility fee is charged separately from the doctor’s fee.
  • Location: GUTCARE and AliveoMedical each name several sites, which may make it easier to find one near home or work.
  • Fees in writing: ask for the doctor’s fee, facility fee and sedation fee separately, and whether GST is included.
  • Results: ask whether findings are explained on the day and how biopsy results will be shared.
  • Language: if you prefer Malay or Mandarin, ask in advance. Dr Tan Poh Seng’s hospital profile lists English, Malay and Mandarin.

How should I prepare for a colonoscopy?

Preparation usually means eating low-fibre food first, then moving to clear liquids and taking a bowel-preparation laxative the day before. Your clinic will give you its own instructions, which you should follow exactly, along with advice on any regular medicines.

Colorectalsurgery.com.sg and Richmond Gastroenterology Centre both describe this sequence. A clean bowel lets the doctor see the lining clearly, so keep to the timing your clinic gives. Because you will be sedated, arrange for someone to take you home afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is a colonoscopy painful?

Colonoscopy is usually done under sedation: Richmond Gastroenterology Centre describes mild sedation and Gastrohealth Clinic light sedation. Gastrohealth notes you may feel mild bloating or cramping afterwards. Tell your doctor about any pain that worries you.

How long does a colonoscopy take, and can I drive home?

Dr Teoh Tiong Ann’s practice says the procedure takes 15 to 20 minutes, though you should allow extra time for checking in and recovery. It is a day procedure, but Gastrohealth Clinic advises against driving afterwards, so bring someone with you.

When should I start colonoscopy screening, and how often?

Clinics publish different starting ages: GUTCARE and Gastrohealth Clinic say 45, while colorectalsurgery.com.sg says 50. GUTCARE suggests a repeat every 10 years at average risk, or every 3 to 5 years after polyps. Your doctor will advise based on your symptoms and family history.

When will I get my colonoscopy results?

AliveoMedical says its doctors explain initial findings before you leave, including how many polyps were removed and where. Biopsy results come later, so ask how and when the clinic will share them.

What is included in a colonoscopy bill?

PS Tan Digestive & Liver Centre explains that the bill has three parts: the doctor’s fee, the hospital facility fee and the sedation or anaesthetist fee. Its published doctor’s fee for a straightforward colonoscopy is about S$1,500, with GST not stated. Ask any clinic for all three parts in writing.
