What is the HPV vaccine and what does it protect against?

The HPV vaccine protects against infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Some types are high-risk and can lead to cervical, anal, throat and other cancers over time. Two low-risk types, 6 and 11, cause most genital warts.

HPV is very common and spreads through intimate skin-to-skin contact. Most infections clear on their own, but a persistent infection with a high-risk type can cause cell changes that develop into cancer over many years. The vaccine prevents infection, so it gives the most protection when given before a person becomes sexually active. It does not treat an existing infection, although it can still protect against types you have not caught.

What is the difference between Cervarix and Gardasil 9?

Cervarix is a 2-strain vaccine covering HPV types 16 and 18, which cause most cervical cancers. Gardasil 9 is a 9-strain vaccine covering those two, five more high-risk types and the two low-risk types behind most genital warts.

VaccineStrainsHPV types coveredCovers genital wart types (6 and 11)
Cervarix216, 18No
Gardasil 996, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58Yes

Not every type in the 9-strain vaccine is high-risk: seven are high-risk and two (6 and 11) are low-risk. Not every clinic keeps both vaccines in stock, so ask which one you will receive, and whether it suits your age and sex, before you book.

How many doses of the HPV vaccine do you need?

Under current guidance, people aged 9 to 14 at their first dose usually need 2 doses. People who start at 15 or older usually need 3 doses over about six months. Your doctor will confirm the schedule for the vaccine you receive.

A 2-dose course normally has the second dose 6 to 12 months after the first. A 3-dose course is normally given at the start, after one to two months, and at around six months. If you miss a dose, you generally do not need to restart. People with a weakened immune system may be advised to have 3 doses whatever their age. Some clinic pages still describe 3 doses for everyone, so check the current schedule with your doctor.

Can men and adults over 26 get the HPV vaccine?

Yes. Men can be vaccinated, because HPV causes genital warts and cancers of the anus, penis and throat in men too. Adults over 26 can also be vaccinated, but the benefit is usually smaller, so a doctor will assess whether it is worthwhile.

The vaccine protects most strongly in people not yet exposed to the HPV types it covers. Clinics set their own age policies: for example, DTAP Express lists its vaccine for adults 18 and over, and Atlas Pacific Medical says it vaccinates men. Check a clinic’s policy before you go.

How much does the HPV vaccine cost in Singapore?

Among the clinics listed, published prices for the 9-strain Gardasil 9 run from S$250 to S$305, and Cervarix from S$23 to S$96 a dose depending on subsidy. The price depends on the vaccine, the number of doses, GST and any subsidy.

Prices are as published on each clinic’s own website, checked on 7 Oct 2026. When you compare, ask for the price of the full course rather than a single dose, whether GST and the doctor’s consultation are included, and whether you pay per dose or for a package up front.

Subsidy and MediSave rules depend on your age, citizenship and the Ministry of Health rules in force, and these change. ATA Medical lists CHAS, Merdeka and Pioneer Generation subsidies, and Minmed lists subsidies for Singaporean women aged 18 to 26. Ask the clinic what applies to you and check the Ministry of Health’s website before you book.

How do you choose a clinic for the HPV vaccine?

Choose a clinic that stocks the vaccine you want, vaccinates people of your age and sex, explains its full-course price clearly and is run by registered doctors. Convenience matters too, as you will return two or three times to finish the course.

What to checkWhy it matters
Vaccine in stockClinics can run short, so call ahead before visiting.
Which vaccine is usedThe 2-strain and 9-strain vaccines cover different HPV types.
Who the clinic vaccinatesAge limits and policies on vaccinating men differ between clinics.
Full-course pricePer-dose and package prices differ; ask about GST and consultation fees.
Doctor registrationYou can confirm a doctor is registered on the Singapore Medical Council’s online register.
Location and hoursYou will need two or three visits over several months.

Does the HPV vaccine replace cervical screening?

No. The vaccine does not cover every HPV type that can cause cancer, so women and anyone with a cervix should keep up regular cervical screening after vaccination, as advised by their doctor.

Screening looks for cell changes or high-risk HPV before cancer develops, which vaccination alone cannot do. Ask your doctor how often you should be screened.

What side effects can the HPV vaccine cause?

Most side effects are mild and short-lived: a sore, red or swollen arm where the injection was given, headache, tiredness or a mild fever. Some people feel faint after any injection, so clinics usually ask you to sit for a short while afterwards.

Serious allergic reactions are rare. Tell the doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to a vaccine before, or if you are pregnant, as vaccination is usually postponed during pregnancy.

How did we put this list together?

We include a clinic only after checking its HPV vaccine details on its own website. The list is A to Z with no ranking, and we report facts and published prices only. Everything on this page was checked on 7 Oct 2026.

We do not show ratings, reviews or outcome claims. Where a fact could not be confirmed from a source we opened, we leave it out rather than guess.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HPV vaccine only for women?

No. Men can be vaccinated too, as HPV causes genital warts and some cancers in men. Check that your chosen clinic vaccinates men, and ask which vaccine it uses.

Can I get the HPV vaccine if I am over 26?

Often, yes, but the benefit is usually smaller because many adults have already been exposed to some HPV types. A doctor will assess your age and history and advise whether it is worthwhile.

How many doses of the HPV vaccine do I need?

People who start at age 9 to 14 usually need 2 doses. Those who start at 15 or older usually need 3 doses over about six months. Your doctor will confirm your schedule.

Should I choose Cervarix or Gardasil 9?

Cervarix covers HPV types 16 and 18. Gardasil 9 covers nine types, including the two low-risk types that cause most genital warts. Discuss which suits your age, sex and budget with your doctor.

Do I still need cervical screening after the HPV vaccine?

Yes. The vaccine does not cover every cancer-causing HPV type, so regular cervical screening is still needed. Ask your doctor how often to be screened.

How much does the HPV vaccine cost?

Among the clinics listed, published Gardasil 9 prices run from S$250 to S$305 and Cervarix from S$23 to S$96 a dose, depending on subsidy. Atlas Pacific Medical gives its price on enquiry. Checked 7 Oct 2026.
